What Are Sensory Items?
Sensory items (also called sensory tools or sensory supports) are objects designed to stimulate or calm one or more of your senses like touch, sight, sound, smell, taste, or movement. They’re often used to help people regulate emotions, improve focus, or feel more comfortable, especially for individuals with sensory processing differences, autism, ADHD, or anxiety.
Common Types of Sensory Items
Touch (Tactile)
- Fidget spinners, stress balls, putty
- Textured fabrics or blankets
- Sensory bins (rice, sand, water beads)
Movement (Vestibular/Proprioceptive)
- Swings, rocking chairs
- Weighted blankets or vests
- Resistance bands
Sight (Visual)
- Lava lamps, light-up toys
- Glitter jars or “calm-down bottles”
- Projectors or color-changing lights
Sound (Auditory)
- Noise-canceling headphones
- White noise machines
- Musical toys
Smell (Olfactory)
- Scented lotions or oils
- Aromatherapy items (like lavender for calming)
Taste (Oral)
- Chewelry (chewable jewelry)
- Crunchy or chewy snacks
What They’re Used For
People use sensory items at home, in school, at work, or on the go. What works best depends on the person—some need calming input, while others need more stimulating input to stay alert.
- Calming during stress or overstimulation.
- Increasing focus and attention.
- Supporting self-regulation (especially in kids).
- Providing comfort or sensory input the body needs.
